Thinking back to my first pregnancy, I remember scanning the aisles of Target, adding anything and everything to my baby registry. I felt so overwhelmed with everything I thought I needed. I know I called my mom about 10 times during that trip!
Turns out, babies really do need A LOT of stuff. But what I didn’t have that would’ve helped me, was a list!
Registering for your baby shower doesn’t need to be overwhelming and it shouldn’t be! To help you enjoy this experience, here is a categorized list of everything you need for baby and a few things you may want for looks😉

Diaper Changing
- Changing Table
- Changing Pad & Covers
- Trash Can or Diaper Pail with Liners– I never had a diaper pail. I used a trash can and just bagged up the smelly diapers before tossing them. But a diaper pail might have been more efficient!
- Wipe Warmer
- Unscented/Sensitive Baby Wipes
- Diapers– Newborn & size 1
- Diaper Rash Cream
- Diaper Bag– This is the one I’m getting this time around and I’m obsessed! You can read more about it here: Everything You Need To Know About The Vanilla Latte Boss Backpack. *Update: I received this at my baby shower and I LOVE it!
Bathing
- Bathtub- We were gifted a bathtub with a digital thermometer and we love it! This AquaScale tub is similar to ours but this one calculates baby’s weight as well!
- Bath Wash– Stick to a baby soap that is for sensitive skin.
- Hooded Bath Towels
- Washcloths
Sleeping
- Bassinet & Sheets
- Co-Sleeper
- Swaddles– My 9.2lb chunk never wanted to be swaddled so we used sleep sacks! ↓
- Sleep Sacks
- Pacifiers & Clips – It’s impossible to know which pacifier your little one will actually like so put a few brands on your baby registry! Be sure to check the size of the pacifiers. You’ll need to start out with newborn or 0+.
Travel
- Infant Car Seat & Stroller Combo
- Car Seat Protector
- Car Seat Cover
- Rear Facing Car Seat Mirror
- Car Window Shade

Breastfeeding
If you’re planning to breastfeed while also pumping milk for baby, or exclusively pump, you’ll need to follow both “Breastfeeding” and “Bottle” categories for your baby registry!
- Breast Pump- Sometimes you can receive a free breast pump through insurance so make sure to check with your insurance company before registering for a breast pump or purchasing one. I had a Medela Breast Pump with my son, but I’m hoping to purchase an Elvie Breast Pump this time around if finances allow! *Update: My sweet mama gifted me an Elvie Breast Pump for my baby shower and it is hands down one of my FAVORITE baby products ever! You can read more about why I love it so much in my post 5 Newborn Essentials That I Love & Use Every Day
- Hand Pump– If your insurance covers an electric pump that isn’t cordless, take it! Manual hand pumps were made for those busy days when pumping in the car is your only option!
- Pumping Bra– You would need this for the Medela Breast Pump but not the Elvie Breast Pump.
- Milk Storage Bags
- Nursing Attire- Bras, tanks, tops
- Cover– Only if being covered makes you more comfortable!
- Breast Pads
- Soothing Gel Pads– These saved my nipples! Haha! Seriously though…
- Nipple Butter/Balm
- Nursing Pillow
If you’re planning to formula feed, you’ll need to follow below!

- Short Sleeve Onesies & Long Sleeve Onesies
- Zip Up Footies– When getting baby ready for bed, zippers are much more practical than snaps!
